Mandatory visit. The prisons are a bit distressing. It is possible to purchase a cumulative ticket for entry to the castle and other buildings in Ferrara

Beautiful, but some custodians (volunteers?) were really not very courteous and not at all inclined to give directions/clarifications.

It needs no introduction, but the real flaw would be to admire it only from the outside! The interior is a marvel in every room, and the view from the lion tower is breathtaking! Seeing is believing

The Estense Castle,
symbol of Ferrara, it was built in 1385 as an instrument of political and military control at the behest of the Marquis Nicolò II d'Este and designed by Bartolino da Novara. Having become the residence of the Estensi, one of the most prestigious families of the Renaissance era, it underwent a series of modifications that transformed it into a sumptuous court residence, full of important collections in terms of value and consistency (paintings, tapestries, refined objects, illuminated manuscripts, coins, weapons). Following the devolution of the Duchy to the Papal State in 1598, the Este family left Ferrara and from that moment the dispersion of their heritage throughout the world began.
Equipped with four powerful towers joined in a quadrilateral by voluminous buildings, surrounded by a large moat and defended by foreparts and ravelins connected with drawbridges, the Estense Castle today constitutes a rare architectural example and at the same time a rich historical attraction for visitors. Always at the center of the political and cultural events of the city of Ferrara, it contains over six hundred years of history within its walls.
The Castle museum, set up by the architect Gae Aulenti, offers a narrative journey that allows you to deepen your knowledge of the building, from the dark prisons to the splendors of the frescoed halls, the history of the Este family and the various powers that used it, the city of Ferrara and its territory, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The climb to the Torre dei Leoni, the oldest in the Castle and the only panoramic point of the city, offers the opportunity to enjoy a splendid view of Ferrara from above. Once you reach the top, thanks to its 120 steps, your gaze can sweep, from a bird's eye view, from the squares of the historic center to the red of the terracotta houses, from the countless bell towers of the churches to the green spaces of the Herculean Addition, up to the circle of walls. To admire the monument from an unusual point of view, it is also possible to take part in boat excursions in the moat on weekends and holidays.

Aesthetically very beautiful externally. Internally, unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by the rooms which were too empty but filled with photographic exhibitions. The lower part with the semi-underground prisons is interesting.
