The food is excellent. There usually is a line, and they bring you inside in groups to explain how the system works. I originally wrote a review that I thought the experience was pretentious, but upon reflection I take that back. I highly recommend.

Small restaurant in a small alley in Rome. Very warm welcome, they take the time to describe the menu to you, and everything is excellent!

Delicious carbonara pasta! The best I have tried without a doubt. Very different flavor than what we are used to.
The only downside is that there is no bathroom on site and there is a queue to wait for.

TL DR; Get Carbonara, it is out of this world
I don't think I will ever order carbonara again (unless I am eating here ofc) How can something so familiar can be so good?! It wasn't just a meal I had, it was a lesson learned: "Best of anything is yet to come, don't lose hope".
People working here are also quite nice and friendly. After an amazing lunch I went back for dinner and had Tagliolini al Pesto and Lasagna Ragu. They were both good but they are just good food, not a life changing/illuminating experience like carbonara. Tiramisu was also quite nice.

I liked this visit. I was lucky to be the very last customer before their closing time on my last night in Rome after missing their business hours twice. I waited about 20-30 minutes before getting in. The staff was kind and friendly. I had a warm chat about American food, blues music, and guitarists.
Their food was impressive. One of the staff members told me that their carbonara can be salty to some people, and it was true because of my lack of experience with true carbonara. I could not stop eating because the way guanciale (pig jowl bacon) cooked made a great distinction. It stayed crispy on all sides, making me faithful to each forkful of pasta. I guess the thicker tonnarelli also played a role in balancing out all the taste spectrum. My kid liked the basic tomato-basil-spaghetti pasta. She is a true connoisseur of tomato-based pasta, so it vouches for its quality.
I am certain I will visit again when I travel to Rome, preferably, late night in colder season, a little empty stomach, and as a group of two.

Discovering this restaurant was undoubtedly my most delightful gastronomic surprise in Rome – I might even say it was a stroke of luck!
Despite its small size and simplicity, the restaurant offers an exceptionally rewarding experience with fair prices. On all six occasions I visited (yes, I went six times!), there was always a queue at the door, but fortune favored me with efficient service and a short wait. However, I confess I would gladly wait for hours to taste those culinary delights again.
Coming from a family that values culinary art, even though I'm not a cooking enthusiast myself, I can discern an exceptional meal. And, oh my God, what an extraordinary gastronomic experience the AL42 provides!
Each time, I thought, "They won't be able to surpass the incredible dish I had yesterday." Yet, astonishingly, the staff always exceeded my expectations! If someone asked me what my favorite dish is, I wouldn't know how to answer. However, I am eager to return to Rome simply to explore the other skillfully prepared dishes by the talented Chef at AL42.
My experience was truly memorable! I received impeccable service and want to express my sincere gratitude for the dedicated attention from Massimo, Eugenia, and all the other professionals who make that place so special.
In a city full of tourist traps offering expensive and subpar food, AL42 stands out as a rare and authentic gem.

Più che ristorante è un laboratorio con cibo da asporto e ti danno la possibilità di mangiare un piatto di pasto buono su dei tavolini con sgabelli. Non hanno il bagno, quindi se devi lavarti le mani o fare i tuoi bisogni… devi trovare altrove. Molto buona la carbonare, prezzi onesti ma non so se ci ritornerei.
