Summer may not be the ideal time to visit Florence. It is hot and crowded with tourists. The four of us wanted to dance on our first night at one of the gay bars in town and I found Queer through online reviews.
Positives: inexpensive drinks, fun pop music, lively crowd that seemed to change every thirty minutes (it was a Friday night). Wide range of gender and sexuality. All seemed welcome.
Negatives: the small space was uncomfortably humid in the August heat and the numerous people smoking inside (not uncommon in Europe).
The age of the other patrons skewed very young on our visit. I have joked as a gay man in my 50s I am invisible to this crowd, but we enjoyed the vibe and especially the music. “Disco Paradise” was added to our playlists and it was everywhere we went in Italy. Great bartenders!
